Tips for Choosing a Corporate Event MC in Perth

May 2026  ·  5 min read  ·  Corporate

Choosing an MC for a corporate event requires different criteria than choosing a wedding MC. The stakes are different, the audience is different, and the skillset required is different. Here's what actually matters.

Relevant Experience Over General Experience

An MC who has hosted 200 weddings is not necessarily qualified to host your national conference. Ask specifically about corporate event experience — the types of events, the audience sizes, the industries they've worked in, and any events similar to yours.

Corporate hosting requires the ability to facilitate Q&As, manage panels, introduce speakers professionally, and maintain audience engagement across a long day. These are different skills from wedding hosting, and they're built through specific experience.

Brand Alignment

Your MC represents your brand on the night. They need to understand your organisation's culture, your communication style, and the tone that's appropriate for your audience. A high-energy entertainer might work for a mining company's end-of-year celebration; they would be entirely wrong for a healthcare AGM.

When interviewing an MC, give them a brief description of your organisation and event, then ask how they would adapt their style. An MC who gives you a specific, thoughtful answer has done this before. One who says "I can do anything" probably hasn't.

Facilitation Skills

Many corporate events require more than announcements — they require genuine facilitation. Can your MC manage a live Q&A? Can they hold a panel conversation that covers the content while keeping the audience engaged? Can they handle an audience member who derails the discussion? These are skills worth asking about explicitly.

Preparation and Process

A professional MC has a clear process. If they can't describe one, that's a red flag.

What to Avoid

The Reference Check

Ask for two or three references from similar corporate events. Actually call them. Ask specifically: was the MC thoroughly prepared? Did they adapt when something went off-script? How did the audience respond? Would you hire them again? References from wedding clients are not useful for a corporate booking — ask for corporate references.
