Wedding MC Opening Speech — Examples and Tips

Weddings  ·  6 min read

The opening welcome is the first words guests hear from the MC — and first impressions at weddings, as at everything else, matter enormously. Here's what goes into an opening that sets the evening up right.

What the Opening Must Do

Length: 90 Seconds Maximum

The room is waiting for the couple. Every second of MC opening time before the bridal party enters is a second the audience is waiting. Be warm, be specific, be brief, and get to the entrance.

What to Avoid

Example Language That Works

"Good evening everyone — and welcome to one of the best evenings you're going to have this year. Tonight we celebrate [Name] and [Name] — two people who somehow managed to find each other in this city, fall completely in love, and talk 140 of their favourite people into wearing their nicest clothes on a Saturday night. I'd say you made the right call. The bar is open, the food is extraordinary, and if tonight goes as well as I know it will — the dance floor is going to be extraordinary too. But first — the moment you've been waiting for. Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together..."

Note what this does: it acknowledges the guests, names the couple, creates warmth and light humour, sets positive expectations, and transitions directly into the entrance — all in under 90 seconds.
