If you've been booking performers and entertainers, you've probably encountered the term "rider." Here's what it means for MC bookings and how to think about it.
A rider is a list of requirements attached to a performance or service contract — things the client must provide in addition to the fee. For musicians, riders can be elaborate (specific drinks, backstage requirements, technical specifications). For MCs, riders are generally simpler and practically motivated.
Not at all — a rider with reasonable, professional requirements signals an MC who has done this enough to know what they need to perform at their best. The requirements above are practical, not excessive.
An MC whose rider is unreasonably complex or who treats preparation requirements as optional while demanding their technical requirements be met exactly has misaligned priorities. The preparation requirements matter more than the microphone preference.
